ThinManager and Containers

ThinManager and Containers

ThinManager is known for providing modern manufacturing teams with a myriad of ways to deliver productivity content to the right person, in the right place, at the right time.

Similar to machine virtualization, containerization is essentially virtualizing on the application level versus the operating system level. Read on to find out how ThinManager applies it's unique capabilities to simplify the delivery of container technologies on the plant floor.

Why Use Containers

Similar to the benefits that machine virtualization offers, containerization also allows for a reduction in resources needed to support an application. This is because the resources for the containerized application are packaged in the container itself. Like a virtual image, this makes the application much more portable and compatible across multiple system types. Containerized applications are ideal for edge deployments. Their resource-light functionality allow them to run with minimal compute and maintenance effort.

ThinManager Visualizes Container Management

Traditional vs. ThinManager Containers

Traditional containers require a lot of technical knowledge and input to get the desired result. ThinManager makes containers easy and visual. We know that OT staff need to be able to deploy modern application technologies on the plant floor, in the control room and on the network edge. ThinManager's provides it's powerful configuration wizard allowing OT teams to deploy containers with a few clicks, removing the need for complex scripting and code.

ThinManager®

ThinManager Web-based Containers

ThinManager supports Containers as a way to deliver a web browser to a thin client without requiring a Remote Desktop Server to do so. Our original set of supported Container images include Chrome, Firefox, Chrome with Citrix, and Firefox with Citrix, for which updates are provided on a quarterly basis at downloads.thinmanager.com.

ThinManager Optix Container

Starting with version 14.1, the ThinManager install includes a FactoryTalk Optix Container, which can be used to host an Optix application directly on a ThinManager-managed thin client. Optix applications deployed for use with the new ThinManager Optix Container support both the Native Presentation Engine and the Web Presentation Engine.

ThinManager BootAssist™

BootAssist provides the ability to leverage the on-board storage of a thin client to optionally cache the Firmware, Terminal Profile, and/or Container Images and Applications. This enables the thin client to boot even if it could not reach a configured ThinServer.
